Paid Internship

The Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL) Consortial Survey Initiative seeks an intern for the Spring 2008 semester. The PACSCL Consortial Survey Initiative is an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded project to assess unprocessed and underprocessed archival collections in 22 Philadelphia area institutions. The three full-time project staff work with staff at participating institutions to survey their collections using qualitative and quantitative measures to rank each collectionís research value as well as the state of the collectionís intellectual access, physical access, housing, and physical condition.

The PACSCL Consortial Survey Initiative Intern will assess collections on a range of subjects at one or more local institutions in collaboration with the project staff and participating institution staff. The intern may also assist the Project Director with reviewing database records and preparing sites for surveying.

Specific responsibilities

  • Working as a team with one or more staff members, quickly and efficiently evaluate collections using survey criteria and enter the data into the project database.
  • Create or revise components of DACS-compliant archival description for collections, including subject and name headings.
  • Perform minor preservation and labeling tasks.
  • Perform other project-related duties as assigned.

The intern will be required to complete 140 hours of work on the project between January and May 2008, according to a schedule developed in consultation with the Project Director. While the project is based at The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, work may take place in several Center City-area institutions over the course of the internship. Work will generally need to be performed during regular work hours, which are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m-5:30 p.m.

Job requirements

Current student or recent graduate from an archives, library, or information studies graduate degree program strongly preferred. Bachelorís degree with strong liberal arts background or equivalent experience required. Experience working with archival collections required. Knowledge of DACS and familiarity with MARC cataloging preferred. Must be able to listen well and communicate effectively in speech and writing. Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

Stipend: $1,750
